In 1984, songwriter Randy Franklin of the Charlotte-based band Crisis attended a Spongetones show, then went home and wrote a song inspired by the band’s Mersey beat. He entertained fantasies of selling the song to the band, but wound up filing it away. So who would have thought 17 years later Spongetones bandmember Jamie Hoover would produce the song for Randy’s own band.
That song is “Someday Girl,” and it’s featured among tunes by some of the best pop and roots-oriented bands from around the country on a disc called “Hit the Hay, Vol. 5.” on Sound Asleep Records. The disc, which will be distributed worldwide, hits the streets April 5.
Crisis has a long history in Charlotte that dates back to a boyhood friendship in the late ‘60s when brothers Randy (lead vocalist, rhythm guitar) and Tommy Franklin (drums, backing vocals) became fast friends with neighbor Ed Leitch (lead guitar). Randy and Ed (Eddie back then) have been playing music together ever since, and they’re responsible for the band’s crunchy pop sound, a result of Randy’s clear melodies and high harmonies combined with Ed’s down & dirty style rock & roll. The solid rhythm baselines laid down by Bobby Hodges round out the foursome, which has been together since 1996.
The infectious pop beat and tight harmonies of “Someday Girl” is a perfect fit for “Hit the Hay, Vol. 5” and it represents one of nearly 300 songs Randy has written. When it came time to record the tune, it only made sense to have it produced by Hoover, who’s gone on to build a reputation as a talented producer for bands like R.E.M., the Smithereens and Don Dixon, among others.
“It came full circle,” Randy says. “I was influenced by his band, then nearly 20 years later I just pulled it out of the notepads and he ends up recording it for us.” “The icing on the cake was when Jamie jammed with us on the song, adding guitar parts and vocals. It was meant to be!”

lyrics
YOU’RE GONNA LOVE ME SOMEDAY GIRL
YOU’RE GONNA LOVE ME SOMEDAY GIRL
YOU SAY YOU DON’T NEED ANYONE
I’LL BET YOU’RE WRONG
CAUSE YOU’RE GONNA LOVE ME SOMEDAY GIRL
SHE COULDN’T SEE
WHAT’S HAPPENED TO ME
I NEEDED HER LOVE
FOR SO LONG
BUT IT COULDN’T BE
SHE SAID SHE WAS FREE
AND I WAS THE ONE
WHO WAS WRONG
YOU’RE GONNA LOVE ME SOMEDAY GIRL
YOU’RE GONNA LOVE ME SOMEDAY GIRL
YOU SAY YOU DON’T NEED ANYONE
I’LL BET YOU’RE WRONG
CAUSE YOU’RE GONNA LOVE ME SOMEDAY GIRL
I KNEW FROM THE START
SHE’D BE BREAKING MY HEART
SHE HAD THAT LOOK IN HER EYE
MAYBE SOMEDAY
SHE’LL SEE IT MY WAY
AND WE WON’T HAVE TO SAY GOODBYE
YOU’RE GONNA LOVE ME SOMEDAY GIRL
YOU’RE GONNA LOVE ME SOMEDAY GIRL
YOU SAY YOU DON’T NEED ANYONE
I’LL BET YOU’RE WRONG
CAUSE YOU’RE GONNA LOVE ME SOMEDAY GIRL
